Neighborhood Walks

Staff members from Macdonough School visited more than one hundred homes today to greet children and families, deliver back to school information, and answer questions about the upcoming school year.

Due to city-wide redistricting, approximately 50% of Macdonough students will be new to the school this year. The idea for neighborhood walks came from the School-Family-Community Partnership Team at Macdonough School as a way to help start the school year on a positive note for those new to the school as well as for those returning.

Families received school calendars, school newsletters, and information about upcoming events from the teachers. In addition to information packets, every child was presented with a fiction or non-fiction book. Copies of a CD recording of the school's song, "Knowledge is Power," were given to new Macdonough families.

Additional events for Macdonough School students and families include:
  • Thursday, August 26th: A special program at Kid City Museum for incoming kindergarten students at Macdonough School from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, August 28th: A Back to School Bash celebration featuring games, music, and fun from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the school’s playground area.

Visit to Yale University

On Saturday, June 19, 2010 a group of Macdonough scholars, families, and teachers visited the campus of Yale University in New Haven, CT. The students were eager to see the historic campus after learning this year about the wonderful opportunities that a college experience can offer a curious mind. The group organized a self-guided tour, visiting such attractions as the old campus where we saw the freshman dormitories, the Yale Art Gallery where we viewed ancient art from Asia, Europe, and Africa, the Women’s Table sculpture by Yale graduate Maya Lin where we honored the presence of women at Yale, and the Bienecke Rare Book Library where we saw one of only 21 Gutenberg Bibles in the world among other precious, beautiful books. Thank you to our students, families, and teachers for helping to make this magical trip possible. We look forward to making this wonderfully educational voyage again next year! Lux et Veritas.

Macdonough at WFSB

After school on June 17, 2010 a group of Macdonough fourth graders and Miss Claffey and Mr. Nelson toured WFSB Channel 3 news studios in Rocky Hill with meteorologist Mark Dixon. The students saw how the news programs we see on television are crafted through the cooperation of many professionals behind the scenes. We learned about the computer editing rooms, the mobile broadcasting truck command center, the control room, and the various elements of the studio set. Other highlights of the trip were silently watching the first half of the five o’clock news broadcast live from inside the studio and then observing the second half of the broadcast from the control room where the directors and producers were noisily discussing which stories and shots to call next. We are very thankful to meteorologist Mark Dixon for his informative tour and to Miss Claffey for driving the Middletown Schools carry all van. We certainly look forward to another exciting educational visit to WFSB Channel 3 next year!

Walking Wednesdays Begin at Macdonough

A few weeks ago, a Macdonough parent shared an idea…

What if we had a day when everyone walked to school? Families, kids, teachers, people from the community. What if we all walked to Macdonough? Imagine how much fun it would be for the students to see their teachers out in the neighborhood. Imagine what a great example it would set for healthy lifestyles. Imagine parents and neighbors getting re-acquainted on the way to school.

Well, today we didn’t have to imagine any more. Today we had the chance to watch a very special tradition unfold.
