Classroom Measurements

First graders have been learning how to measure using non-standard units in math.  Yesterday, students measured different classroom objects with a variety of non-standard measurement tools.  We used paper clips to measure a book, pencils to measure a recycling bin and much more!

India from Miss Morello's fourth grade class came and read "Jerome Camps Out" to Mrs. Spaman's class this afternoon.  They were so excited to have her visit the classroom.  Thank you India for a wonderful story time!

3 Alarm Field Trip for Third Grade!

Third grade visited the Middletown Fire Department on Main Street.  Firefighter Al taught students about the history of the department, gave us a tour of the building and showed some of the equipment firefighters use.

Second Grade Learns About Trustworthiness

Today in Health class, Mrs. Raney and Miss Green's class talked about what it meant to be a trustworthy person and friend.  They then each wrote down one characteristic of a trustworthy friend to add to a class trustworthy chain.  Some responses students wrote were; "A trustworthy person is someone who follows the rules," "A trustworthy person is someone who doesn't lie," and "A trustworthy person is someone who is friendly."

Spring Concert

Tuesday morning students sang and played songs celebrating holidays such as Valentine's Day and Halloween. It sure was a blast! A special "Thank You!" to our Kindergarten students for opening the show and our 5th grade guitar soloist!

Macdonough School selected for Positive School Climate Workshop!

Young Audiences of Connecticut has selected Macdonough School to host a Positive School Climate Workshop for our fourth grade students.  Cyd Slotoroff, a professional singer-songwriter will present her acclaimed workshop: Creating Community: Appreciating Differences on Thursday, June 7th.

Creating Community: Appreciating Differences

Drawing on the power of contemporary folk music, Cyd sings true songs about young people's experiences and solicits discussion drawn from feelings and issues in the songs. In a small group forum, students talk honestly about how they treat each other - about friendship, popularity, status, and the pressures to fit in. Cyd encourages students to share and develop strategies for taking a stand for themselves and others to create a more safe and respectful community.

Kindergarten Learns About Insects

Kindergarten just finished learning all about insects. We learned that an insect has three parts: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. An insect also has six legs.

First, we learned about ants. We painted our very own ants and saw an ant hill.

 Next, we learned about bees. We saw a real honeycomb and learned how bees make honey. Then, we also made our own bees.  As we worked we listened to the song The Flight of the Bumblebee.

Insects are really cool!

The Final Mile Race

Mrs. Oszurek and Miss McKenzie led a group of students at The Final Mile race in Cheshire on Saturday.

The students have been accumulating miles at recess and in physical education classes during the spring. The Final Mile race provided an opportunity for students to run their "final mile" in front of hundreds of other students, family members, and teachers in the stadium at Cheshire High School.

Our Butterfly Release!

Over this past weekend, all of the butteflies emerged from their chrysalis'. First graders were able to enjoy having butterflies in their classroom to observe for a few days.  Earlier this week we released them so they could be free to continue the life cycle!

Kindergarten Visits the Book Bower

Today, all of kindergarten went on a walking field trip to the Book Bower on Maint Street. The Book Bower is a used book store, and Mrs. Bowers was kind enough to let us all visit and pick out a fun book to take home.

We had a great time finding books about science, Barbie, Disney, animals, and lots of others!

Macdonough Celebrates Nurse Appreciation Day!

Students and staff honored Nurse P on Nurse Appreciation Day. 

In addition to songs, notes, and cards, a book was donated to the Macdonough School library in Nurse P's honor! 

A Bad Case of Stripes, written by David Shannon, is the newest book in our library collection!  The story is about a little girl named Camilla Cream who loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don''t like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worried about what other people think of her. In fact, she''s so worried that she''s about to break out in… a bad case of stripes!

NUMBER KIDS Build Geodomes

Second grade NUMBER KIDS buddies from Essex joined us on Monday to learn about the strongest structure of building. A geodome! We learned how the triangles, verticies, and sides join together to make a structure strong enough to stand up to a hurricane.

Here is Quinn and Mr. Mallory demonstrating the push and pull of a triangle. Then it was time to build the geodome!

                  

It gets bigger and bigger and stronger and stronger!

When completed our geodome was over 14 feet high, with 60 triangles! It was an amazing project and a fun activity to do with our buddies.

Jonah Center River Paddle

Students from Macdonough School have been invited to accompany volunteers from the Jonah Center on a River Paddle taking place on Saturday, June 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. 

The paddle will launch from Middletown's Harbor Park.

 

 

Macdonough School Students to Participate in KiDSMARATHON

KiDSMARATHON is an 8 – 10 week training program that enables kids to complete a full marathon by running incremental distances each week leading up to the finish in front of hundreds of fans! During the project, elementary students, ages 7-12, develop life-long fitness skills, positive nutritional habits, social-emotional learning, a feeling of accomplishment, and self-confidence for themselves. The mantra of the program is “finishing is winning and winning is finishing”.

Mrs. Oszurek has coordinated Macdonough School's participation in the KiDSMARATHON program which will culminate in a field trip to Cheshire High School on Saturday!
